Musculoskeletal Care
Most musculoskeletal injuries that are treated with physical therapy recover mobility, strength, and function than they had to begin with. South Keys physical therapists are adept at treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal injuries. We stay current with best practice standards and have a rigorous internal clinical training mechanism, known as the South Keys Approach. From hamstring pulls and ankle sprains to shoulder impingement and low back pain, we’ve got you covered. South Keys is also what’s known as a hands-on, or manual therapy, practice. Manual therapists use specialized hands-on techniques to limber tight joints, muscles, fascia, and other tissues, which in turn allows your body to move with fewer restrictions and very often with less pain.
Post-Operative Care
A good many musculoskeletal injuries can recover fully with the guidance of physical therapy alone, but for some injuries, surgery is the very best option. If this was the case for you and you’ve already had surgery, rest assured that post-operative rehabilitation is a mainstay of care delivery at South Keys. In addition to using best practice standards, we coordinate directly with your surgical team and incorporate the protocol specific to your procedure. As you heal, we work with you to gradually restore your mobility, strength, and function. If you are unsure whether or not you need surgery, give us a call, or schedule an evaluation, we can help. If it turns out that you need a surgical opinion, South Keys works with industry-leading surgeons from leading hospitals and will help you find the right match.
Sport Specific Care
South Keys physical therapists like to stay active and are adept at treating a range of sports injuries. Did you know that most sports injuries can recover fully with physical therapy? It’s true. In fact, a lot of sports injuries that are treated with physical therapy recover more mobility, strength, and function than they had to begin with. No one likes to sit out of their sport, we totally get it, and we want to help. We stay current with best practice standards, assessment tools, and training techniques for different sports. Recognizing that no two sports injuries are the same and that one size does not fit all, South Keys physical therapists use a holistic, person-centred approach to build the right plan specific to you and your sport. As you recover your base mobility, strength, and function, your physical therapist will incorporate advanced drills, real-time biofeedback, and motor learning principles to prepare your body to safely reengage with your preferred sport.
Women’s and Men’s Health (Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy)
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy (PFPT) focuses on evaluating, identifying, and improving musculoskeletal dysfunction in the pelvic floor. PFPT can help with conditions and symptoms such as bowel and bladder incontinence, urinary frequency/urgency, pelvic organ prolapse, chronic constipation, Dyspareunia (pain with sexual intercourse), pregnancy & postpartum pain in the low back, abdomen, hips and pelvis and pelvic pain. Oftentimes, these symptoms are caused by imbalances of strength and tone between the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding hip and abdominal musculature. Treatment may include manual therapy techniques such as trigger point release, soft tissue massage or scar mobilization, strengthening exercises for the muscles of the pelvic floor, breathing retraining, biofeedback to cue relaxation or activation of muscles and education on self-management.
Childbirth is a 9-10 month event where the musculoskeletal body system, specifically joints, ligaments, and muscles, are continually changing, stretching, and adapting to the change in weight and body mass. After delivery, the body may take just as long to readapt back to its prepartum status. After giving birth, many people often do not have a definitive physical concern and may feel a sense of weakness or have a hard time connecting with their bodies or pelvic floor muscles. Seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist can ensure a safe and specific return to exercise for someone who has just given birth.
Neurological Care
In addition to treating musculoskeletal injuries, South Keys clinicians are also able to help you recover from a range of neurological impairments. While not an acute or subacute facility, we are able to help you recover from chronic cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) or strokes, movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, vestibular dysfunction, chronic pain syndromes, and others. Our treatment philosophy is based on motor learning principles, which uses a combination of hands-on cueing, purposeful repetition, problem solving, and education, all of which facilitate recovery. Some of our clinics are even equipped with specialized spatiotemporal devices to help us better quantify your movement and set measurable goals. Treatment sessions are one-on-one with an expert clinician and our focus is on quality over quantity.
Performance Optimization
Did you know that the same team of physical therapists that helped you recover from your injury can also help you optimize your performance goals? That’s right, physical therapists are experts in the evaluation, analysis, and correction of dysfunctional movement biomechanics. South Keys uses a combination of hands-on testing, video analysis, and state-of-the-art motion capture technology to build a personalized performance profile for patients looking to improve the efficiency of their movements. Each performance profilesare divided into modifiable components that are correctable with manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, sport-specific advanced exercise, drills, and coaching. So, whether you’ve just finished your rehabilitation or are uninjured if your goal is to learn about optimizing your performance South Keys can help.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?
Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical procedure that uses high-energy waves to treat chronic or acute pain and promote the regeneration of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues. By focusing acoustic waves on an affected area of the body, tissue repair and cell growth can be sped up which can reduce pain and also restore mobility and reduce further sensitivity. Shockwave therapy is used in a number of different medical disciplines such as sports medicine, orthopaedics and physiotherapy. Many physiotherapists, trainers and other medical professionals endorse shockwave therapy due to its ability to accelerate recovery time and reduce both chronic and acute pain.
HOW DOES SHOCKWAVE THERAPY WORK?
The application of shockwave therapy to a designated area of the body that is causing pain or has recently suffered an injury is a very simple and non-invasive procedure. The shockwave is applied to the tissue or bone by a registered physiotherapist or another medical professional using a device that generates a high-energy, acoustic wave generated by compressed air. The kinetic energy of the wave is transferred into the tissue which begins to stimulate the regenerative process at a cellular level. The wave itself is a high-amplitude sound wave that is transferred through the skin and other tissue to the affected area without the need for any surgery or anaesthesia. The number and frequency of shockwave procedures vary from patient to patient based on the severity of the pain or injury.
There are many specific ways in which shockwave therapy has proven its effectiveness in treating acute and chronic pain. In the past, this procedure was viewed as mostly ineffective, but today further studies and improvements to the procedure have led to the opposite conclusion. For instance, recent studies have shown that shockwave therapy can directly promote the formation of new blood vessels in damaged tissues. This helps improve the blood flow to the affected area, which is necessary to maintain the body’s natural healing process. The acoustic waves used in shockwave therapy have also been proven to have a positive effect on the healing process of bones and tendons since the waves are able to create what are known as capillary microruptures which increase the flow of blood and nutrients to the damaged area. In addition to these positive effects, there are a number of other ways that shockwave therapy can help reduce pain and improve regeneration such as addressing chronic inflammation, stimulating the natural production of collagen and reducing the buildup of calcium causing joint pain and immobility.
